Everett Micro Lofts (Portland, OR)

This three-story retail/residential brick building is located on a 40’x100’ corner site at SW Broadway Avenue and Everett Street in the Downtown Waterfront District bordering the Pearl District. Built in 1914, the Sengstake Building, has been operating as the Everett Hotel until the 1980’s and then as transitional housing until the mid 2000’s at which time the two upstairs floors were vacated. Renovating the building involved converting 30 hotel rooms to 18 efficiency apartment units. Other interior improvements included a new roof with seismic upgrades and adding fire sprinklers through out the building. In the process this historically significant building was preserved and placed on the National Historic Register. The building, designed by Foulkes & Hogue, is an excellent example of the Commercial Style of Architecture applied to a low-rise building—one variation of “the Chicago School” style. The Guilt Club Restaurant and Bowery Bagels comprise two of the three retail spaces.
